Interview

What is the significance of the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy to the hairdressing industry?
It brings hair colour to the forefront every year, which obviously is something I am very pleased about! It makes hairdressers really think outside the box with colour and use it to bring a hairstyle alive.

What are your favourite L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy competition memories?
Winning my regional heat many years ago and also being a judge for the first time last year - I loved every minute of it!

What is your criterion for a L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy winner?
Beautiful colour that suits the cut completely - brave, creative colouring that is totally wearable and 'sellable'.

What does it mean to win the competition?
I think it's a great springboard for any salon - it offers great prizes, PR support and recognition from your peers.

If you were entering in this year's competition, what advice would you like to be given?
Be progressive, be totally prepared and get a great model with great hair that you can really work with. Don't get over complicated - keep it simple but have a clear vision of the overall look that you want to create and think about whether it would make a great front cover!

What personal / character traits do you think make a L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy winner?
You have to have inner confidence, talent and great teamwork.

How do you think the standards of the competition have changed in recent years?
I think that people have realised that it is about a great overall package not just the hair colour. The cut has to be right and the finish is crucial! Last year's winner was the epitome of gorgeous wearable hair.

What are the benefits of competing and being a part of the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy competition?
Totally invaluable! Working with your team, the planning and preparation, then the buzz of the regional heat… it's as inspirational to see what everyone else is doing as it is doing something you've totally created and worked on yourself. You start to see how important the makeup and clothes are to a great overall look - this helps you with all the shows and photo-shoots that you might be involved in later on. It gives you great team spirit whether you are in the competing group or supporting from the sidelines.
