22 year old Gemma Hardie has shown sophistication and talent beyond her years in her stunning entry for the L'Oréal Young Colourist Award 2007, winning her the approval of a tough judging panel and a place at the Live Final in May. The colourist from Philosophy in Abingdon submitted a striking photographic entry, displaying gold clothing, accessories and body glitter with detailed colour work in red tones cut into a sensual bob.
"Gemma's rich colour comes from hidden panels beneath the top layer of hair" explains Philosophy salon owner and mentor Mark Creed of Gemma's qualifying entry "They are applied to contrast with upper tones, giving the hair vivid tonal dimension. Gemma noticed the flux between organic/natural vs. modern/futuristic on the catwalks and took this as her prevailing theme for her entry in the hair's contrasting tones and the metallic golds of the clothing and makeup on bare skin."
Gemma will now go on to the L'Oréal Young Colourist Live Final where she will have to recreate her look in 3.5hrs and face the judging panel to discuss her vision and motivation. 2007 marks Gemma's debut into the world of competitive hairdressing and she has been working hard to stay on top form for when she faces the judges.
"Gemma is looking forward to the Live Final in London immensely," comments Mark of his colleagues attitude "She is highly charged and full of energy. In preparation for competition she has taken presentation courses, done plenty of research and practised hard. Everyone at the salon is very proud of her and waiting for May with great anticipation."
