Interview
What is the significance of the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy to the hairdressing industry?
I truly believe this is one of the most important awards that anyone can win. It's a major competition in the calendar year and definitely one of the awards that you should have on your CV!
What are your favourite L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy competition memories?
It would have to be me winning it 1992! This was the first year of the new concept, so it was a very exciting time and one of the best nights! We've also won as a group Men's, Eastern and the Glamour Magazine award. So, for me, it's not just about being a judge but actually being a part of the competition as a whole.
What is your criterion for a L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy winner?
You need a beautiful model; the hair should be contemporarily styled into a new look, with a ground-breaking mix of fabulous colour and great clothes. It's important that the total look works harmoniously.
What does it mean to win the competition?
It gives you kudos within the industry, gets you known amongst your peers and helps to elevate your position in the industry. But once you have that award it's really up to you to build on recognition for the future.
If you were entering in this year's competition, what advice would you like to be given?
Find an original idea! Also arrange your own clothes stylist and have a really strong idea about what you want to create. Either do what everyone else does but 100% better or produce something completely different.
What personal / character traits do you think make a L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy winner?
Single-minded ambition with a die hard attitude!
How do you think the standards of the competition have changed in recent years?
I'd say greatly. People are far more switched on about how to enter competitions. You can't use the girl next door anymore, you have to really pull out the stops and go for it. Also, entrants have started to really take note of the rules and follow the brief as closely as possible, which means you have a clearer understanding of what is required by the judges.
What are the benefits of competing and being a part of the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy competition?
Its great motivation for team and salon, plus the PR on the back of getting through to the finals or winning is fantastic!
